Home Improvement and Design Tips

Almost every log home is a custom design if you start changing a floor plan or front. By their very nature, is planning its own soil, a large number of untested challenges open – especially if you try to design the house himself. With almost all log home builders, an architect in-house, you can take your idea and turn it into a series of drawings that correspond to their building system. Your home is structurally sound. No need to wait for them to report any inconvenience or snafu in your design. It’s a business practice, and at the end, the design of your home on your … and you have to live with it. Here are some tips that I suggest to make your design more effectively.

MECHANICAL: open floor plans are the essence of modern log cabin. They are a bigger house, cook and preserve the sense of isolation. However, if you have a second floor, you have to think about how to get to the plumbing, electrical and plumbing (forward and reverse) on the first floor rooms. They are not with the exterior walls for that, you must create enough interior walls on the ground floor to accommodate all the mechanics. Each object, in all probability takes its own space between the 2×4. Even if you use a heated floor, you will need pipes for air conditioning. There are some systems, high-pressure pipelines for the use of much smaller diameter than conventional cables, there are other options if you are pressed for space. But the best solution is to think ahead. If you try to do a full log inside wall (or not) to use, you may sacrifice the possibility of more pipes in place.

Plumbing: The plans of the wisest soil to try those who run the bath together (either back to back or one directly above the other) and shorter on-dock facilities. This may not always be done, but the placement of the bathroom floor, trying to match the ground floor with an interior wall. This type of heating system is not the queue in all directions.

CABINETS: I bet that log homes are usually notoriously short on storage space would be. I know it’s my house. First, it would be a terrible waste of a closet against an outside wall paper will be placed. Why hide your beautiful logs? And because we try to keep the square feet to a minimum, it seems almost a crime to waste precious space on closets. However, there are more than one reason to count them. Not only do we seem to collect more stuff as we age, but by the law in several states, the firm determines whether a room is a room or office. This may affect the resale (or refinance) of your home. Here’s a suggestion: Place two units side by side on the two walls of the rooms, cabinets may not be huge, but it does not change the shape of the parts. Try to include a cloakroom near your front door.

WINDOWS: What you’ve probably already read many times, you can not have too many windows in a log cabin. The wood absorbs light like a sponge. If you have a large white wall, is the insertion of a window up not only more light, it adds character. Some people add windows along either side of the window hangar. In my case I had to move the roof line to increase the size of my bedroom window, because the code is six square ‘had to evacuate. In each bedroom upstairs, you need your windows to be large enough to mount in the event of a fire. Remember also that too many direct-set windows, the height of the airflow to reduce your staircase. In my house, I added an awning (a small hinged window) to the bottom of the head in my dormer window. This has left the air, but even if the rooms can be stuffy. A ceiling fan helps, but eventually I may need to add a skylight to create a design.

KITCHEN VENT: One of the most difficult decisions we made concerned how to vent the exhaust hood. If you do not want your furnace to an exterior wall, you have an interesting conundrum. Does the exhaust pipe between the ceiling joists on the outside? Work as long as you add on another fan? I gave up and moved my stove to the outside wall, but then we had a hole cut in the logs for the vent. How horrible! How can you hide? My builder built a little cedar box around the hole and we were lucky enough to have a glass roof, you can not see it from all directions. But this ugly vent is on the front of the house, and if I thought I moved the kitchen to the rear of the house.

Crawl Space vs KELLER: There are several reasons a cavity, rather than choosing a basement – none of them particularly comfortable. Besides the obvious disadvantages of a crawl space, there are some things that we thought not. I, in my blissful ignorance, do not worry about the ugly electrical panel. Of course, I knew we would have a panel meters, but I do not know where they were thinking. I did not know he was in the code, we could not get the plate into the cavity. Since we do not have a garage, the panel was installed in one of our rooms on the wall of the newspaper. Is not it beautiful? Another disadvantage of the crawl space: You’ll need a water heater short if that’s where it happens, and you need to buy a horizontal furnace installation. Because our water quality was poor, we had to install a purification system. The 54 “unit must be mounted vertically in our crawl space and is 48″ high. We had a punch hole in the concrete floor to make room for the unit.

Gutters: Yes, you want the water away from your cabin at any cost. There may be challenges, we have an alpine-style house with a vaulted ceiling. However, the roof comes to a deep V in the corners to create a magnificent rain chute. This is not necessarily beautiful when it dumps on your deck! Because of the generous advance that comes with a log cabin at the end of the project away from walls and T is not logical angle to hang a downspout. On a corner, I am content to a rain barrels to the former, and on the cover, we had to divert water to the pergola we built against the house, and ran a gutter along the edge of the pergola.

Overhangs: You must have at least one foot 1 ‘and preferably an overhang to protect two of your logs. This overhang should be considered when designing your roof line. If you have overlapping angles, make sure not to create a water trap or a snow hole. There could meet, there are times your overhang of the roof at a different angle. You can actually increase a part of the roof a short distance.

Door opens: This can make one of the most annoying errors and you do not catch until it is too late. Think about what your door when you open the way together. Is it for any other input? Has two doors bang together? If you are in a confined space, it is open in all directions at all? When we installed our bathroom vanity, we have not thought of opening the door, until the lines were already connected. The basin is made by an inch, it could have been worse. You can by swinging the other direction (forward, it is already suspended, or your joints are on the wrong side) to compensate. Or, in the design phase as you can with a narrow gate. Or get a smaller vanity.

Electrical: The electrical diagram and plumbing will not come from your plans log home building. The manufacturer is not where you are your sales opportunities. Once the plans are confirmed above, the time comes for you to sit around with the electrician and mark exactly where you want your outlets, switches and lights. Local code determines the minimum distance between the branches, but everyone will tell you, has more than you need, you’ll probably use it anyway. Even if you do not need it, put your cable and telephone in each room, there is so much easier and cheaper to do it again. Also, remember, you can not always have too many lights in a log cabin. Plan ahead for game plans – particularly those in the ceiling. You will not be enough to add later.

Dead Space: If you are a big log cabin, you have so much space that does not really matter. But account for most of the rest of us, every inch. There are some approaches that might maximize your floor space. First of all you really need hallways? Some designs are bulky divided spaces so that all lead to a small hallway. I prefer none. Also, remember that each cabinet door creates dead space. If you organize your floor plan so that closet door swings in an area that is already dead (eg, another closet door or a foyer), you can open the room a bit. Is there a purpose in your attic, or is it just an open porch with a room? Can you get a piece of furniture on it? Otherwise, it might be used to give an angle and make your “open with” room a bit small.

I hope I have helped a little. I learned a lot of these tips the hard way, and I’m sure there are many more that I have yet to meet in. Finally, a personalized learning curve is huge.
